As we start a new year, homeowners are looking for ways to enjoy the winter months, and according to the U.S. Houzz Emerging Winter Trends Report, also looking for smart entertaining solutions. “They’re also continuing the embrace of seasonal cheer, and experimenting with geometric décor and designs,” explains Marine Sargsyan, Houzz staff economist.
I recently covered Houzz’s 6 bathroom trends you’ll want to incorporate, and was excited to cover the interior design trends for 2025. Below are 3 key takeaways from their emerging winter trends report, along with photos from Houzz designers, and data on how much Houzz searches for certain keywords have surged, compared to last year this time.
Smart Entertaining Solutions

- Kitchen islands with a drop leaf: searches increased 202%
- Pop-up trundle daybeds: searches increased 179%
- Professional organizers: searches increased 50%
- Vinyl record storage: searches increased 46%
According to Sargsyan, homeowners want to entertain and host, and they’re looking for multifunctional features that can also help them get organized. “Houzz searches for ‘kitchen islands with a drop leaf’ surged 3.5 times compared to the same period last year – and this points to a preference for flexible, space-saving solutions,” she says, explaining that this type of design allows homeowners to flex between prep and mingling spaces.
Also, versatile furniture – like pop up trundle daybeds, which have surged in Houzz searches by 3 times compared to the same time last year – make entertaining overnight guests more practical.
Vinyl records are increasing in popularity, and when entertaining, homeowners are looking for vinyl record storage solutions that double as design features. They’re also trying to declutter their homes for wintertime hosting, which is leading to an increase in searches for professional organizers.
Embracing Seasonal Cheer

- Green decorative pillows: searches increased 285%
- Blue decorative pillows: searches increased 101%
- Green table lamps: searches increased 82%
- Red rugs: searches increased 55%
- Wool rugs: searches increased 36%
The holidays may be over, but homeowners want to continue creating a welcoming and festive environment throughout the winter season. “Compared to last year this time, searches for ‘green decorative pillows’ have increased 4 times, and searches for ‘blue decorative pillows’ have increased by 2 times,” Sargsyan says. Searches for “green table lamps,” also increased, along with searches for “red rugs” and “wool rugs.” Sargsyan explains that homeowners want festive color palettes, and rugs with natural stain-resistant properties.
Geometric Décor And Design

- Arched cabinets: searches increased 156%
- Square coffee tables: searches increased 47%
- Checkerboard floors: searches increased 47%
- Oval mirrors: searches increased 41%
“Modern and structured designs, especially geometric shapes, help to add balance throughout the winter season,” Sargsyan says. “Searches for ‘arched cabinets’ almost tripled, and this reflects a growing interest in organic modern style.” And she says searches for “oval mirrors” shot up 41%, compared to the same time last year, while searches for “oval bathroom vanity mirrors” increased 5 times.
Sargsyan explains the increased interest in “square coffee tables” and “checkerboard floors” reflect a desire to create visual interest and sharper-lined structure in rooms. “They’re used to create a bold, graphic statement that complements softer textures and color,” she concludes..
